NATIONAL SOCIAL REGISTER: SOFOLA RECEIVES DATABASE OF OWORO POOR AND VULNERABLE, PLEDGES SUPPORT TO LASOCU.
The Executive Chairman of Kosofe Local Government, Hon. Afolabi Sofola has received the database of over 6000 poor and vulnerable people domiciled at the Oworoshoki area of the Local Government from the team of LASOCU which has been gathering the data of the poor and vulnerable in Kosofe Local Government Area since the commencement of national social register exercise which is being organised by the federal government.
Hon. Sofola received the database on Tuesday 15th when team of LASOCU paid him official visit after completing capturing of data of vulnerable people at Oworoshoki ward A and B before proceeding to other wards in the Local government.
The council Chairman in an interview with news men, stressed importance of the nationwide programme and pledged his continued support for the exercise before the end of his tenure.
"Government cannot provide policies without having concrete data; to make it accurate we must have the database which is the work being done by LASOCU for several months now. So the reports will be handed over to the designated offices for proper documentation. This in the long run will be used to alleviate poverty among our citizens.
"The programme on Social Register is a great job well done. Without knowing the actual database per community and planning, it will be difficult to identify the poor and vulnerable. So the database is very important. Corporate organizations will no longer need to approach the Local Government or Chairman before giving out palliatives to the vulnerable.
"The programme is very important and Kosofe Local Government will give them full support to achieve their objectives. As an outgoing Chairman, with few days left in office, I will make sure everything is made available to support the exercise": He said.
The team leader of the project in Kosofe Local Government Area Mr. Dele Felix while presenting the database to the Local Government Chairman thanked him for the immense support he gave the team of LASOCU from the beginning of the exercise in the local government.
He equally thanked the CDC chairman of Kosofe Local Government Hon. Segun Babatunde for the support given to the team of LASOCU to accomplish its assignment at Oworoshoki.
His words: "I want to appreciate everyone, my fathers and mothers present here. Most especially my Honourable Chairman, Afolabi Sofola, he has been a wonderful person since this programme commenced. Many times, he would call me at late hours to know about the progress made so far. He has been supportive financially and morally.
“Mr. Chairman never allowed us to feel it's a minor programme, he has always been there for us. We really appreciate you Sir. Many local government Chairmen have not been supportive in this programme but Hon. Sofola has taken this responsibility upon himself to ensure we don't feel rejected. He's indeed an unrelenting humanitarian, may the almighty God continue to strengthen him.
"Likewise my CDC Chairman, he has been a wonderful person who stood by us attending to our challenges for possible solution.”
The State Supervisor for National Safety Programme Mr. Olasunkanmi Oladele In his overview of the programme and federal government intervention, harped on the importance of the national social register and praised Kosofe Local Government for doing a good job.
He said: "It has been a wonderful experience since we started the programme from Kosofe including Ikosi-Isheri and Agboyi Ketu. I want to sincerely appreciate our Chairman, Hon. Sofola and Mr. Dele Felix; they have been very wonderful in all respect. Holding this type of programme at the Federal level, is really demanding that is why we are being carried along at the grassroots. We have been using a community target group to make programme agenda come through and by his grace we have done so much.
"National Social Register, simply put, is designed to address the vulnerable households across Wards and Communities in the local government. For example, someone who has been working over the years, the pandemic lockdown experience alone can make such person vulnerable. So this is why the government has looked deeply into angles they can come in with all platforms and interventions. However, Kosofe Local Government has a whole has done a great job.”
The CDC Chairman, Hon Babatunde also appreciated the efforts of the LASOCU praising them for a job well done.
"The LASOCU team went from Wards to Wards to do the capturing and database, by this we can have accurate information on vulnerable people in our communities. So the team have been diligent with their works, for this we are happy": he said.
