Neglecting Education Infrastructure in Nigeria: A Case Study of Odogunyan Junior Grammar School.
Education is the foundation of human capital development and a key driver of economic growth in any society. However, Nigeria's education system has been plagued by several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, poor funding, and a lack of political will. And one of the schools that has been particularly affected by these issues is Odogunyan Junior Grammar School, located in Ikorodu,  Lagos state.
I happened to attend Odogunyan Junior and Senior Grammar School, and I can say for real, we had the best teachers during my time there. From Mrs. Badru, to Mr. Awiyoola, Mrs. Victor etc., we had teachers who were committed to their duty. Over the years, this school has developed an enormous volume of talents which makes it stand head to head with Ikorodu High School, that's located within 10 minutes driving to the Local Government Secretariat.
Odogunyan Junior Grammar School is a school located in a low-income area in Lagos, Nigeria. However, it boasts about 10 — 20+ giant manufacturing companies that generate huge taxes for the state government. According to schoolrosta.com, the history, facility, and administration of the school seems to be non-existent. The record of a school that had existed for over 30 years is unknown to the public. That's how bad it gets for a school that produced top-notch artists, bloggers, writers, and national political representatives. This school's neglect has far-reaching consequences for Nigeria's human capital development and overall progress.
The school's infrastructure is in a terrible state due to a bad town planning, abysmal waste management structure which has allowed flooding, poor structural maintenance of the school building, overpopulation of students which has stretched the capacity of the building beyond its limits, and located the school very close to an industrial estate with factories that engage in heavy industrial activities. Currently, the buildings in the school premises have been demolished for almost a year, and no sign of reconstruction is ongoing after being abandoned for four years.

The challenges that students and teachers face due to the school's bad infrastructure are poor learning outcomes, competitiveness in mathematics competitions, overcrowding, industrial waste pollution, lack of textbooks, and overcrowding in classrooms. The school caters to students within Odogunyan, Odo-kekere, Agodo, Odonla, and from larger communities like Ogijo, Agbede, Oshodi, etc., in neighboring Ogun State.

The neglect of this school is an act of terror to our human capital development as well as the overall progress of Nigeria. Education is essential to a country's development, and Nigeria is no exception. The government must recognize the importance of education and its need for standard infrastructure. Secondary education infrastructural development is needed to adequately manage the young talents that are in their formative years.

It is essential to enumerate the privileges the students and teachers of Odogunyan Junior Grammar School lose to their bad infrastructure. The teaching condition is terrible, and the school authority had to share the different classes into the Odogunyan senior secondary school compound, Zumuratul Islamiyya primary school, and Ikorodu high school. It is unacceptable for students to be deprived of a conducive learning environment, especially when their future and the future of the country are at stake.

The consequences of neglecting education in low-income areas are severe. It perpetuates a cycle of poverty and deprives young minds of the opportunity to reach their full potential. Nigeria's human capital development suffers when children are not provided with adequate education, and this ultimately affects the country's progress.

The government must take urgent action to address the problems at Odogunyan Junior Grammar School. It is not enough to demolish the buildings and leave them in a state of disrepair for years. The school needs to be rebuilt, and the infrastructure must be upgraded to meet modern standards. The government can take cues from other African nations that have made progress in their academic system by investing in education, providing adequate infrastructure, and training teachers.

In conclusion, the neglect of Odogunyan Junior Grammar School is a severe problem that requires urgent attention from the government, alumni association, political representatives of the constituency where the school is located, Lagos State Education Board, and the Federal Ministry of Education. Investing in education in low-income areas is crucial to Nigeria's human capital development and overall progress. The government must recognize this and take concrete steps to improve the infrastructure of schools in these areas, starting with Odogunyan Junior Grammar School.
