BARR. MOYOSORE OGUNLEWE''S DEMOCRACY DAY MESSAGE
BARR. MOYOSORE OGUNLEWE''S
DEMOCRACY DAY MESSAGE
This day is one of extreme significance in our history as a nation as it marks the return of power to the people.
I congratulate the people of Kosofe Local Government and millions of Nigerians all over the world today in celebrating democracy day .Today is celebrated annually to commemorate the annulment of June 12 Presidential election in 1993 presumed to have been won by *Late Chief MKO Abiola.*
In Nigeria, the right for all citizens to enjoy equal participation in the democratic process was achieved after considerable struggle and suffering. We remember and celebrate all those who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.
However, June 12 has now taken another dimension. It has become a national celebration and a very powerful reminder that as a people and a nation we have what it takes to practice, nurture and defend democracy.
The struggle to achieve democracy gives it a special value and places responsibility on all of us to support the democratic process. We congratulate Nigeria on its progress since 1999, including the first peaceful transition of power from a ruling party to an opposition party in 2015.
I therefore thank *President Muhammadu Buhari* and National Leader, All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, *Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu* for actualising the people's aspiration in keeping the memory of the struggle in our national consciousness.
We must give kudos to *Chief MKO Abiola* who along with his wife paid a full price. *Chief Alfred Rewane* also paid a full Price and very many of them who died in the process and some who are still alive. These are the people on the Frontline who made it possible for us to enjoy the democracy we are enjoying today.
*Asiwaju Bola Tinubu* went on exile. He was potent in dealing with the military junta.
However, Democracy is not only about the voting process. It also requires a strong and ongoing commitment from political actors to uphold the democratic ideal. In Kosofe Local government over the years we have consistently upheld this ideal through accelerated grassroots development, welfare and capacity building of our people.
As a government we have been able to sustain our democratic freedom and ideal through adequate provisions of public infrastructures, health and educational facilities for the general wellbeing of our people.
And I want to assure you we will never rest on our oars in continuing to fulfill our public obligations towards our people and communities in order to sustain our hard earned democracy.
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Long Live Lagos State Government!!
Long Live Kosofe Local Government!!!
Happy Democracy Day.
Signed:
Hon. Barr. Moyosore Adedoyin Ogunlewe.
Executive Chairman, Kosofe Local Government
June 12, 2022.
