In what appears to be a joint and concerted efforts to reclaim the environment from unhealthy activities of human, the State Government under the auspices of Parks and gardens in conjunction with local government have called on individuals to save our environment by planting trees to protect it from imminent disaster.
In his keynote address, the deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat said evironmental crisis did not begin globally, it started locally, saying humanity must reconnect with and be in harmony with nature.
The deputy Governor who was represented by Mrs. Taiwo Cole, explained that the tradition of tree planting in the state has been on for a decade and had contributed to a healthier and greener environment.
This year's celebration as the deputy governor hinted, is not different and should be seen as yet another way to express our deepest love for nature and promote a balance in economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations.
Speaking further on this year exercise which takes its theme from "in harmony with Nature", the state number two man said the theme is a beautiful reminder on the need to guide our relationship with nature, adding that it is worthy of note that climate action is now mainstream in the plan of the state government climate Action plan (2020-2025) which it intends to incorporate into all its activities.
In his welcome speech, the Executive Chairman, Kosofe local government, Hon. (Barr) Moyosore Ogunlewe whose speech was delivered by his vice, Hon. Oluwole Sosanya said that the earth is currently undergoing radical transformation due to depletion and excessive carbon- monoxide being released into the atmosphere. He added further that activities of humans more than anything else raise the bar of climate change.
He said fortunately, nature has produced a sustainable means of balancing the effects of climate change via tree planting which has become an annual event, he said, without this, humans and animals would have been wiped out from the surface of the earth..
Also speaking at the event, Secretary to the local government, Hon. Fatai Gbadebo appreciated the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu, he said the program has been existing before Sanwoolu but the trees that had been planted in his administration surpassed the previous ones.
He urged the administration not to give up with the laudable initiative.
" Our people should plant trees and protect them because they will be useful to us," he said
